A unique tour, which has inspired many films, including Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and is one of the most scenic train journeys in the world. On this journey, you will not only experience the beautiful scenery of Scotland, but also the history and culture of the region. From rolling green hills to picturesque villages and castles, the Jacobite Stream Train offers a truly unforgettable experience. With its vintage carriages and steam engine, you’ll be transported back in time and feel like you’re part of a fairy tale!
The Jacobite steam train was built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was initially intended to take Scottish workers who were then working in the mountains, transporting them to the various construction sites in progress.
But that’s not all. The train was also used to transport tourists to the Highlands.
The Jacobite steam train was used until the 1960s, when it was replaced by buses and cars. The Jacobite steam train was then abandoned and left to decay.
In the 1980s, a group of volunteers called the West Highland Railway Society wanted to bring the Jacobite steam train back to life. They reassembled the tracks and began to renovate the train. The Jacobite Steam Train reopened in 1988 and has been in operation ever since.
Board a steam train and travel through the Highlands!
Operated by the West Highland Railway Society, the Jacobite Steam Train is named after the Jacobite uprisings of the 18th century.
Inside, you will live an extraordinary experience! The train cars are made of wood, with leather seats, wooden tables and old-fashioned curtains.
It runs from the beginning of April to the end of October every year, and makes its circuit twice a day.
The Jacobite Stream Train is without a doubt the most exotic train in Scotland! And for good reason: imagine here an old school train, black and red, fueled by big shovels of coal… and a chimney that spits its steam at full speed!
This offers a first class show!
There is then only to enjoy the circuit! And this is the most scenic route between Fort William and Mallaig: it passes through the wild and beautiful Glenfinnan Gorge, then follows the coast to Mallaig with views of the famous Skye Bridge.
You will pass through the Highland landscape with its green pastures and picturesque villages. You will also have a breathtaking view of Britain’s highest mountains and the famous Glenfinnan viaduct: enough to discover the best of the region!
Don’t hesitate to sit at the back of the train. This is the place with the best view.
