Visiting the Isle of Skye? Don’t miss Fairy Glen, a more confidential and less known place for tourists. It can be compared to a mini “Quiraing”: it is a landslide, which gave rise to surprising geological formations. On the program, pyramidal hills, lochs, basalt blocks, mountain ridges and greenery everywhere you go!

Visit Fairy Glen

An amazing geological formation!

Known as the Valley of the Fairies, Fairy Glen is one of the hidden treasures of the Isle of Skye. It is found on the west side of Trotternish in Balnacnoc above Uig.

The place is simply unusual, with amazing geological formations. It is pleasant to discover them on foot, during a small hike in the middle of nature.

A parking lot will allow you to put your car down to start your exploration.

You can then follow a marked trail. You don’t need to be a champion hiker to follow it: the path is pleasant to walk and just requires basic equipment (hiking shoes, warm clothes, windbreaker…etc).

Then you just have to enjoy the landscape: you will be surprised in front of these mini hills in the shape of pyramids. You will also cross on your way the “Castle Ewan”, a huge basalt block, which looks like a ruined castle!

Possibility to climb to its top for the most adventurous. Rather narrow, its plateau can only accommodate a handful of hikers… but believe us: the view at the top is really worth the detour! Green hills, tiny hills, ridges and reliefs all over… The landscape is unusual!

Note that there is behind this boulder, on the side of the cliff, a very small cave where it is said that pushing coins into cracks in the rock will bring good luck.

Rocks placed in spirals… by travelers!

When one discovers Fairy Glen, one notices without waiting strange alignments of megaliths, below in the valley. Above all, do not believe that it is a megalithic site coming straight out of the depths of the ages!

These rocks describing spirals have been placed there by travelers. The idea would come from local tourist guides. They would have encouraged the tourists to place rocks to develop a drawing of spiral. An unexpected initiative, which according to the guides would contribute to preserve Fairy Glen in all its wild beauty.

It is also customary for travelers to place a coin in the center of the spiral as an offering to the fairies. This would bring good luck!

Getting to Fairy Glen

Let’s face it: Fairy Glen is rather unknown to tourists. A real advantage, but it poses some problems to find the place! The easiest way is to follow our GPS data: a small parking lot will be waiting for you on the spot but be careful… The parking lot is often crowded in summer!

You may have to park further away, in Uig, if the place is overcrowded. Count 30 minutes of walking to reach Fairy Glen: a necessary evil, but really worth the effort!
